It may be winter, but Netflix’s latest romance is about to heat up. People We Meet on Vacation, an adaptation of Emily Henry’s 2021 novel of the same name, arrives on the streaming platform on Jan. 9, and stars Emily Bader and Tom Blyth as best friends Poppy and Alex, who make a pact to travel together every year. Of course, Poppy and Alex see each other as more than friends — if only they’d admit that to themselves. Instead, People We Meet on Vacation is a master class in romance narratives like friends-to-lovers, miscommunication and the slow burn of will-they-won’t-they.
On Dec. 26, Netflix dropped a teaser for the new movie that includes Taylor Swift’s hit “August.” Featuring Poppy and Alex staring at one another longingly before finally walking over to say hello, it’s just a small slice of the romance we’ll see onscreen.
Here’s what else to know about the upcoming film.
What is People We Meet on Vacation about?
Free-spirited Poppy (Bader) and buttoned-up Alex (Blyth) have spent years maintaining a long-distance friendship, reconnecting each summer for a shared getaway. But when the two get together for another trip after years apart, romantic feelings begin bubbling to the surface. Are they really just friends … or could they be something more?
(Spoiler: It’s something more!)
Is there a trailer?
Yes! People We Meet on Vacation dropped its full trailer earlier this month. In addition to Bader and Blyth, the trailer shows Molly Shannon and Alan Ruck as Poppy’s parents, who suspect (obviously) that Poppy and Alex are more than just travel buddies. It also reveals the moment that, in the novel, breaks Poppy and Alex apart for years: an almost-kiss that both misinterpret as rejection.
The trailer also gives us a great needle drop: Robyn’s 2010 song “Hang With Me,” which features the line, “Will you tell me once again/How we're gonna be just friends?”
Who else stars in People We Meet on Vacation?
Here’s the official cast list, per Netflix’s Tudum:
Tom Blyth as Alex
Emily Bader as Poppy
Sarah Catherine Hook
Jameela Jamil
Lucien Laviscount
Lukas Gage
Miles Heizer
Tommy Do
Alice Lee
Alan Ruck
Molly Shannon
Are there more Emily Henry novels getting the movie treatment?
Yes. Yulin Kuang will adapt and direct Beach Read, published in 2020, and production company Tango is set to adapt her 2022 novel Book Lovers. Last year, Henry also confirmed that her 2024 novel Funny Story is in development with Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company, with Henry writing the screenplay.
Meanwhile, Happy Place (2023) will receive the small screen treatment in a TV series produced by Jennifer Lopez.
